Carhartt Mansion
The Carhatt Mansion was built around 1912 by Hamilton Brakeman and Annette Welling Carhartt. Hamilton and his father-n-law started Welling & Carhartt in 1882 near Detroit, Michigan. In 1889, he changed the company to Hamilton Carhartt & Co and converted to manufacturing exclusively workingmen's clothing. Hamilton purchased his first of two Rock Hill textile Mills in May of 1907 and starting purchasing farms in November of 1907. After building the mansion in 1912, the Carhartt's purchased addtional property, eventually owning 1,200 acres along the Catawba River where they grew alfafa, corn and cotton and bred Arabian horses, polo and Shetland ponies, Berkshire hogs, sheep and cattle.
